Trinity, hail.

For this issue, I have composed an exclusive tragedy in (sort of) the Attic style. I think some of it is rather good. I have a vague sense that I meant to write another encomium for somebody, but even Homer – even Pindar – nods. Perhaps next issue.

I also notice, casting my eyes over the issue, some historical essays – very informative! Like The Rest is History (which, I’ve just remembered, I saw live last Halloween, how cool is that?), but in print, and not about so much boring stuff! The writer of “The Five Greatest Fires in History,” it seems, is a fan like myself of the rest being history, although in a Catholic way, of course, and in total conformity with Humanae Vitae. Other interesting things I learned in the development of this issue: the definitions of “sere”, “scrofulous” and “internecine”. A provincial has so much to discover. Like Bonfire Night – why? Back home we celebrate Queen Victoria, which I think is so much more edifying.

There are also puzzles – puzzles are too hard for me – I can’t even play a board game without having a crisis of self-confidence – but you English do seem to like punishing kinds of fun.

And I hope, I really do, that you enjoy it.

Fraternal love burning hotter than a heretic or Guy Fawkes effigy’s flesh,
